Thoughts from the yogarchy

Welcome to the Wallowing and Self-Pity Center (WaSP)

At the WaSP, we want you to feel at home because we know that there are few spaces in the world that allow you to inhabit some much needed self-pity- which we define as deep reverence for the cards you have been given in your life and the garden of challenges you inherited and now own.

The hope here is that you can wade in the mud, move around and discover that you will not drown. You might be afraid that you will get stuck in the muck of sadness and pain, and be taken over by it, and the world fears it too. But we know you won’t drown. First, however, we need to learn to wallow in a way that is truly nurturing to us.

Wallowing is Natural

It is popular to think that wallowing behavior in people is a symptom of weakness. Sure. But what we know from our other animal friends like hippos, is that wallowing is used by the individual animal, and its group to regulate, prepare for, recover from or maintain a state. Wallowing is truly about comfort. Comfort is a wonderful and much-needed response to a vulnerability, injury or weakness and there is nothing wrong with that. Some animals spend a lot of their days wallowing; wallowing is what their lives are.

True wallowing promises a return and a comeback, but not without a strong dose of distraction from the event. And as expected, a return to life, promises and shepherds a future wallowing. There is a natural cycle and pattern to this. We want to encourage you to investigate your natural rhythm and not suppress it.

Self-Pity is An Art

It might eventually be a science. Science often plays catch up to Art. But we digress.

This is a skill that takes time to learn to do properly in a way that heals. Some of us have a very special chip on our shoulder engraved with the message, “Never feel sorry for yourself.” and have failed at it or is a mantra we swear by but sense we are very close to breaking. But as a mental exercise, or if your neck will allow you, slowly try to establish the exact location of that chip, its texture or plating, the font of the engraving and gently pluck it off your shoulder piece.

Don’t rush to discard it. There are no quick fixes. Simply, keep the chip in a safe place to be seriously studied at a later date. Today, is about Reverence. Because the art of self pity is about records, remembering what has happened, what is happening and our often sad projections for the future, it is hard but important work. So let’s start with the basics, the list you really want to make and let’s get it out of the way.

Healthy Wallowing

The key to healthy wallowing and self pity is a healthy sense of self. How do you see yourself within the choices of your life? Do you like yourself above everyone else? Are you completely in your own corner?

We have more to say on this but look out for those in upcoming blog posts. In the meantime take a tour of our site.

Next stop is the Consolations Booth.
